Drill Bit Back-end Fittings

There are two primary industry-standard back-end fittings for core drill bits (excluding Hilti): ½” BSP and 1 1/4” UNC. The ½” BSP fittings are typically used on core barrels ranging between 12mm and 45mm in diameter, with an effective drilling length of 350mm. The 1 1/4” UNC fittings are used for larger core barrels, from 45mm and above, with an effective drilling length of 450mm.

The ½” BSP fitting offers a significant advantage for smaller core barrels by allowing higher rotational speeds. This faster rotation improves productivity, making it ideal for drilling smaller diameter holes while maintaining precision and efficiency.

Most core drills (excluding Hilti) can accommodate either fitting. We offer a wide selection of adaptors, allowing you to use a core barrel with almost any type of drill, including SDS drills.

Core Drilling Tips for Optimal Performance

To ensure straight, precise holes, we highly recommend using a drill stand when performing core drilling. A drill stand enhances accuracy and makes the drilling experience considerably more enjoyable.

It is also crucial to operate your core drill motor at the correct speed for optimal cutting performance. Larger drill bits require slower rotational speeds to cut effectively. Drilling at excessive speeds can cause the segments to glaze and may damage your core drill. Always consult your core drill manual to determine the correct gear for your drill.
